Just updated this script yet again. Now renames in order by date, to keep your pictures/files in the order of which they were created as well! Works great on pictures. Please, submit any bugs you find! Info for submitting in script notes. Get here.

UPDATE! September 07th 2010

Just updated the script and fixed a bug. In the past, if you used this script to rename a bulk amount of files using the same naming convention as it is already, it would remove/delete files. This is because if it tried to rename IllinoisTrip-99.jpg to IllinoisTrip-01.jpg and 01 already existed, it would go ahead and perform the  rename therefore destroying the original IllinoisTrip-01.jpg.

Let me start off with telling you exactly why I needed a batch rename script. First, I am an organization FREAK. Especially when it comes to the structure of directories and files. Second, whenever my Fiancee and I take a break from reality and go somewhere to relax, there are always pictures taken. We really love going to the different State Parks here in Indiana. As always, there are usually several pictures that are taken. To be even more specific about my organization, I have a Pictures folder that is divided up into sub directories. Those subdirectories contain pictures (duh!) which are named as follows: <event>-<number>.jpg. Depending on the actual number of pictures, the numbering format tends to change. If I have 100 pictures in a directory, then it ends up being something like this: TurkeyRun-001.jpg and incrementing all the way to 100. Some of you might wonder why the 00 padding? I do that so that all the pictures stay in perfect order. One through one hundred. If you ever have noticed, if you have 100 photos without the padding, you end up with a structure like this. 1, 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,2,20,21… see how pictures 1 and 2 end up being right before 10 and 20. I HATE that (yes, I tend to be anal about this). Anyhow, this is what the script does for me. It will rename the pictures, based on the criteria I input. You can specify the directory to pick through, the starting count (so if you add to an existing folder with existing photos), the prefix, and of course, which extension it is you wish to rename since, even on Linux, pictures usually hold an extension even though on the Linux platform it is not needed.  However, I have made this like a classic Linux command-line program, meaning you do NOT have to specify any option you dont want. You can simply just run the script without any arguments/options. It will default to current directory, start count 1, prefix is “Pictures”, and the file type is JPG. You can also run with a -h or –help function to display all available options. So without further ado, here is the script.

I have had this issue for about 2-3 weeks now, and it was one of those times when “it just happens”. I had not changed a thing on my phone, yet the bug was there. It took me forever to figure out why, and now I want to share with you the fix, because honestly there wasn’t enough information out there and I had to dig through a lot of google searches to find the solution.

Bug & Solution

Turns out the bug is with SBRotator4. When I went to rearrange or delete apps, the icon would for apps would disappear but the text would remain… you could still select the app, however, the issue was quite annoying. I only installed this application long ago just to see what it was like when everything was rotatable. I thought it would be nice, but honestly, it was a pain in my ass. I disabled it and forgot all about it. I hadn’t messed with SBRotator4 in months, that is until this issue came abroad. The fix is easy, all you have to do is load up Cydia and update SBRotator4. However, like many others, we mess with Cydia a few times here and there, but not enough to open it up so it can find new updates. Mainly because it takes 2 minutes or so for it to update the database.

The challenge, get the Linksys WUSB600N version 2.0 working with Arch Linux. This is a LOT easier than I made it out to be and is also the reason why I am writing this so, perhaps, I can save you some time.

What You Need

First off, you’ll need the Linksys WUSB600N v2 (duh!). Second, you will need to browse over to Ralink and grab the RT3572USB driver package for Linux. The version that I have is 2.5.0.0 but newer versions shouldn’t effect anything (hopefully). You will also need to make sure your device ID is 1737:0079 by running this command (while your USB wifi dongle is plugged in): lsusb | grep WUSB600N

If you have the proper device, you should get the following information: Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1737:0079 Linksys WUSB600N v2 Dual-Band Wireless-N Network Adapter [Ralink RT3572]

As long as your ID matches and the version matches, you should be fine to continue with this walkthrough.

What To Do

Now we need to make a few modifications so that the driver will recognize the Device ID and function with your device. So, inside the folder that you extracted from the driver package, navigate to the “common” directory and open rtusb_dev_id.c for editing. Navigate through the file until you reach “#ifdef RT35XX”. This is the region of the file where we will be editing. What we are going to do here is add the Device ID that we found from our previous lsusb command. Here is exactly what you need to put in this section.

{USB_DEVICE(0×1737,0×0079)}, /* WUSB600N v2 */

Once you have added this, save and exit this file. We now have one more file to edit, and that is the configuration file. I am only going to walk you through the two basic configurations needed to get the device working as I did not need the wireless N features. Go back to the root directory of your driver folder and navigate to “os/linux/” and open config.mk for editing. We are going to change the following values to “y” values (default is “n” in the config file).

HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y
HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y

Again, after you have done this simply save and exit. Now we are ready to compile. So cd back to the root driver directory and type the “make” command. When the driver is finished compiling, you will need to install as SuperUser, which I do by using sudo.

sudo make install

Now your module is installed. What you should do now is add “rt3572sta” to your modules array in your rc.conf file. This file is located in /etc directory. You may also need to blacklist other modules. Typically, you only want the module you need running so check and blacklist as necessary. I usually use the command “less /proc/modules” to see which wireless drivers are loaded and rmmod the ones I dont need then use my command history to blacklist unwanted modules. For example, I had the rt2800usb and rt2x00usb modules loaded and they were interfering with the usb dongle, so I unloaded them by using the following commands:

su
rmmod rt2800usb
rmmod rt2800lib
rmmod rt2x00usb
rmmod rt2x00lib

After I did this I added the following to the modules array in my /etc/rc.conf:

MODULES=(!rt2800usb !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib !rt2800 rt3572sta)

Notice that rt3572sta is not prefixed with an exclamation. That is because the (!)exclamation is the identifier to blacklist modules, and without loads modules. Now, lets go ahead and reboot… don’t worry, I’ll wait… go ahead, reboot. Now that you are back, lets go ahead and bring up the interface by using this command: sudo ifconfig ra0 up

This will go ahead and prep the device for you. Now, you can use a network manager to connect wirelessly to your router with support for all encryption schemes.

I just rebuild my wifes PC, after two years of inactivity due to the motherboard blowing out. I purchased a quad core intel i5 processor in a Gigabyte motherboard. I ended up meeting somewhere between function, value and price. I have 8GB of DDR3 inside but I am running a 32-bit Arch distribution.

Plans

I wanted to originally start with a 64-bit Arch Linux install but for some reason the disks wouldnt burn properly and I was in a time contraint to get this done. I was reading somewhere, although I didn’t bookmark, where someone had started with 32-bit and upgraded to 64-bit without reinstallation. So, look forward to a blog detailing my adventures of upgrading my distribution from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Is It Worth It?

Well, yes. I have 8 gigabytes of RAM and my 32-bit operating system can only detect half. That means I am only running at half the performance. I spent the money to beef up and repair the PC, so any half measures is only cheating myself.

I navigated through my dot files in the home directory and came across the mime file. This file is located at, at least on Arch, in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list. I edited this file with nano and the last entry was this: inode/directory=eog.desktop

Well, I figured this would be the culprit considering the eog(eye of gnome) entry. I changed it to look like this: inode/directory=nautilus.desktop

I saved, and then tested. It worked! The Places menu now uses Nautilus. WOOT WOOT. Hope this information helps someone else out there.
